["Rent a 4WD vehicle from local agencies in São Tomé city for accessing remote beaches and Roça plantations via unpaved roads.","Negotiate taxi fares upfront as meters are absent. Shared minivans called 'candongueiros' run fixed routes between districts for budget travel.","Book Omicam ferry tickets at the dock office for inter-island travel, with departures typically in the morning and afternoon.","Download the 'Taxi STP' app for reliable taxi booking in São Tomé city, though cash payment remains the standard."
Common Scams to Avoid
Unlicensed 'porters' at São Tomé International grab bags from arriving passengers and then demand inflated tips. Keep your luggage in sight and only use clearly identified airport staff or handle bags yourself.
Taxi drivers outside the terminal quote fares in euros at double the going rate in dobra. Insist on using the meter or agree on a dobra price beforehand by checking typical fares with your hotel.
Currency-exchange touts inside the arrivals hall offer poor rates and sometimes short-change hurried travelers. Use the bank counter or ATMs in the public area instead, and always count notes before leaving the window.
